Work from home and stay sane while you do it

Working from home is not a new concept and it is becoming much more popular over the years. The advantages of staying at home, setting your own work hours and work routines and setting your own deadlines have their very own charm. You can set your own goals and your own work methods, whether you want to work early in the morning or late at night, what sort of work you want to do and how you want your lifestyle to be; it’s all in your control but sometimes and for many people, the extra amount of control can actually cause them to lose control over their sane lifestyle and work routine.

Whether you run your own business or are in the process of setting your own business or whether you work for a company from home, you will still have to set some guidelines are rules for yourself. If you don’t do that, you may find yourself and your family getting neglected; the house may be much messier than should be, you may not be taking care of your diet or health, dressing up each day as you would to go to the office may not be an incentive anymore and most of all, you may not be spending enough time with your family and for your own self.

Before you take on the huge responsibility of working from home, you should sit down and prioritize your work goals. Make sure the work you do from home is something you really enjoy because after sometime, working from home may seem much more boring or frustrating than working at an office job so doing something you really enjoy is a very important factor. Secondly, make sure your family knows and understands the work you do and the amount of time this work will take up. This is important so that your family members can take care of themselves, run their own errands and do their chores if you’re not available.

A very effective and important part of your work should be to remind yourself why you are doing what you’re doing from home and to find ways to keep your incentives alive and your determination on track. So you may have to remind yourself each day what your motives for working from home really are and accepting certain situations (such as a messier house) that will be out of your control. Make sure you know what you’re doing and try doing it in the most efficient and yet cost-effective manner.

Set realistic boundaries for yourself; don’t overwork yourself while validating it by the fact that you are working from home. Make sure your friends and family understand the importance of your work you do and respect it as a real job; spending time with them is fine but make sure you don’t stay away from your work routine. Take care of yourself, your diet and your health; take out time each week just for yourself to relax and distract your mind from work. Try to keep up your social life and don’t let anybody discourage you from your goals and your work-from-home job!
