Glee's Star Jane Lynch Checks and Reads Her Kids' Texts

Jane Lynch
Be sure to tune in as the new season of "Glee" premiers Tuesday, September 21st at 8/7c. I know I can't wait as I find this show to be very entertaining. On another note Prevention Magazine Sparks Blog recently did a Q&A with Emmy award winner Jane Lynch on her personal tips for safe text and how she checks out the text of her own children. Below I will share with you her interview in which you can weigh in on by leaving a comment below.

The Full Interview by Prevention Magazine:

Your videos for LG show you as a reformed cell phone abuser with a bad case of text rage. What's the most ridiculous violation of cell phone etiquette you've ever witnessed in real life?

Jane Lynch: I was in the audience of a live play when a woman answered her ringing cell phone and gave a loud vocal critique of the play.

As a parent, what ground rules for texting and cell phone use have you set?

Jane Lynch: Part of the goal of LG Text Ed is to educate parents about the importance establishing boundaries so everyone in the family knows the rules about their mobile phone use. Here are some suggestions I share with other parents when they ask about me what I personally recommend:

NO texts or calls:

· During meals whether at home or in restaurants

· During designated "family" time

· in the middle of family discussions

· in the classroom where they should be studying

· While driving a car (they aren't old enough to drive just yet, but for parents with older kids this is a must!)

· At special events or services (cultural, religious, etc.)

· While doing homework or studying

Also, my partner and I let the girls know that we absolutely reserve the right to review texts, e-mails, address books, and content at any given time. It's a good idea to discuss this with your child in advance so it is not seen as "snooping" otherwise you lose their trust. It's also a good idea and extra safety precaution to have access to all of your child's passwords and lock-codes.

Do you think it's important that parents learn to text, get on Facebook and embrace other technologies their kids are using? Why/why not?

Jane Lynch: Having a Facebook page is also a great way to show your kids that you have stepped out of the stone age and that you are down with the latest technological advancements, and of course now it's easier to see what they are up to on the site as well.

But, don't just take my word for it. LG did some research this year and found that parents who communicate with their kids through texting, resulted in a closer relationship between parent and child. And don't forget to set a good example, no one likes a hypocrite, so make sure you are practicing what you preach. No texting while driving or during family time, period.

*Actual stat - 90 percent of texting parents report feeling closer to their teens as a result of texting (LG Text Ed Survey commissioned by LG Mobile Phones and conducted by TRU Research, July 2010)

If you were going to bust a member of the Glee cast for text offenses, who would it be?

Jane Lynch: They are all very responsible texters! They also really enjoy each other’s company so they're not always gabbing to other people on their cells.

You'll be hosting Saturday Night Live in October -- and Ryan Murphy has said that he accidentally broke the news to you via text message. Was that a crazy way to find out?

Jane Lynch: Not so crazy, really. Ryan and I text more than we call. But to get that kind of news via text… it's a new world!

Have you ever sent an embarrassing text or email by accident?

Jane Lynch: I've sent many misspelled hasty texts emails that I hope I am forgiven for!

What "Text Ed" wisdom would Sue Sylvester impart to her students?

Jane Lynch: Don't get dirty with the QWERTY, kids! Sexting is a major no-no that can have damaging and long-term effects. Do you really want your cheerleader coach or glee club instructor to see a picture of your "what whats?" I don't think so!

What's the best text or email you've received since winning your Emmy?

Jane Lynch: The email from my Mom congratulating me and asking what famous people I met.

Now I would like for you to weigh in on this subject by sharing your thoughts on checking your kids messages. Do you agree or disagree?
