California's Most Romantic Beach Destinations

If California is known for one thing, it’s sand and ocean. From San Diego to Big Sur, California’s some 840 miles of pristine coastline is home to many of the nation’s most idyllic beaches. And quite a few of the towns and cities that sit behind these beaches are worthy of a postcard themselves.

Of course, not all California beach destinations are created equal. Some places are geared towards surf and water sports while others are more known for fishing and boating. That said, a healthy majority of these beach communities make for the perfect romantic getaway.  So with that in mind, here are some of California’s top beach destinations that are certain to stoke the flames of passion.

The Mendocino coast

Starting in the north, California’s Mendocino County is home to sprawling beaches that are known as much for their beauty as they are for their privacy. Indeed, there are few things more romantic than a shoeless stroll down a deserted stretch of coast arm in arm with that special someone. And the village of Mendocino is just as romantic as the beaches. Most of the buildings date back to the 19th century and there are many quaint Victorian B&Bs that make for a very romantic weekend stay.

Santa Cruz

There’s no rule that says romance and fun need to be separate. In fact, the beaches of Santa Cruz provide an abundance of both. Yes, the beaches are often packed with kids, but that just provides an activity for couples of all ages to act like kids themselves by taking a ride on the roller coaster or enjoying an hour or so in an arcade. For more traditional romantic excursions, couples can opt for a wine tasting in the Santa Cruz Mountains or taking in the majestic redwoods at nearby Big Basin Redwoods State Park.

Carmel

Those who have only heard of Carmel in passing may know it as a sleepy beach town on California’s central coast that Clint Eastwood once ran. However, those that have spent time there know it is one of the most romantic and tranquil spots in the whole of the state. Couples will certainly want to stroll the sleepy streets of this European-style village, and there are many B&Bs and luxury resorts in which to book a stay. As for beaches, the 17-mil drive to pebble beach is known for its scenery as well as the number of sandy coves and tide pools along the way.

Santa Barbara

Those couples in the market for luxury would do well to vacay in Santa Barbara. On top of the pristine beaches, this “American Riviera” is known for its world-class resorts, fine dining options, museums and high-end shopping. Commercialism aside, Santa Barbara does offer a number of romantic activities, from premier wine tasting to whale watching just off the coast.

San Diego

Think of San Diego as Santa Barbara’s more laid back – but equally romantic – little brother. This beach metropolis is wonderful at any time of year and offers a number of romantic beach adventures – such as kayaking at La Jolla. However, those couples who want the romance and nothing but the romance need to make a beeline straight to Coronado, with its long, white-sand beaches supporting an impressive stretch of Spanish-colonial hotels and luxurious restaurants.

These are just a few beach destinations couples should consider when planning a visit to California. Of course, the most romantic getaway of all would be renting a car and taking off down the Pacific Coast Highway, hitting each destination on the list.
