DIY – Toilet Paper Roll Cover (Well, sorta!)

If you've been looking for some creative crafting projects to do with the kiddos, look no further! Yesterday, I actually did a super-fun craft project with my lovely daughter and I thought I'd share the how-to with other moms (and dads) who are looking for fun ways to keep their kiddos busy (and creative) all while making something super cute (and useful) for the bathroom. We took an old Cottonelle Roll Cover and turned it into something FABulous (Well, at least we think it's FABulous!). And by we, I mean me.

I'm not a crafter or DIYer but Pinterest has inspired me to become a little crafty and let me tell you I don't have a crafty bone in my body. Seriously, I'm not kidding! But, I thought I'd take a shot at it anyway. Anyhoo, this is my very first DIY project so let me know what y'all think. Don't be too harsh, or else I might cry (just kidding, of course!). Big girls don't cry -- they BLOG. As you can tell, I've been drinking the corny juice today. Let's get back to the project.

What You'll Need

Spray Paint (your choice of color)
A Cottonelle Roll Cover (If you don't have a roll cover, you can use a coffee can )
Newspaper (for the messy spray paint)
Yarn (your choice of color)
Marker (your choice of color)
Elmer Clear School Glue (for bonding the yarn to the roll cover)
Chipboard (from
Silhouette CAMEO (gotta love it)

Now You're Ready to Start Creating! YAY

A little bit of preparation is needed before you bring your child into the project. First, you'll need to take the roll cover outside and place the lid on the newspaper. Then, spray the lid until it's thoroughly coated with paint. After you're done spray painting the lid, make sure you allow it to dry overnight. Now you can now bring your child into the project. For the rest of this post, I'll try to do it in photos so that I won't bore you guys to death with my bad writing (hey it's late).

Then take the clear glue, apply it underneath the lid (please, don't remove the lid during this process). Then take the yarn and wrap it around the roll cover until you've reached the bottom, then glue the bottom to make sure it doesn't unravel. You may have to press down on the yarn for a few seconds, this will allow it to bond with the glue. Once finished...... it should look like this.

Pretty, huh? You can have your child wrap the yarn around the roll cover, if you like. Next, open the Silhouette Studio software, which comes with the Silhouette CAMEO. And, find an image you like. Sorry guys, I meant to post a screenshot of the software but my sleepiness is starting to kick in ( I've been up for almost 20 hours). Crazy, right?

Then take your Chipboard and load it into your Silhouette CAMEO (I didn't take a photo of this step, sorry!).

After your chipboard has been cut, have your child write toilet paper or whatever phrase you like onto the chipboard. I'd recommend gluing the chipboard on the top of your roll cover, and not directly on the yarn.

Here's the finished project

Before and After

DIY – Toilet Paper Roll Cover

Your child now has their very own personalized roll cover designed by them (and Mom). They can use this roll cover in their bathroom or store their little goodies in it. Also, I would like to thank Silhouette for providing me with the CAMEO and chipboard. They rock, right?

Disclosure: I received a Silhouette CAMEO in exchange for this post. The words and opinions expressed in this review are strictly my own. Please visit their website for product information! As with any product, please do your own research before purchasing, just because we like/love the products featured on Mama of 3 Munchkins, don't mean you will.

  2. I have to admit that I am far too lazy to store my TP inside something, but I do like the idea for hiding trinkets or even jewelry.

  11. That looks so cool. I'll have to wait until my son is a tad older because he would destroy this.
